(ABC 6 NEWS) - As President Obama pushes for health care reform, one group is taking the matter into its own hands. The People's Health Care Foundation says its time to take action lawmakers won't.
Olivia Talbot wants to fix the current health care system and she's starting in Rochester.
"We cannot count on the government at this point so I think we should look to the people," says Talbot.
Bob Hanson says, "When it comes to the cost or affordability people often scratch their heads and we're looking to go beyond finding funds through taxation."
At an event Tuesday, Bob Hanson explained how the new foundation would first rely on funding from other foundations and then start-up business to fund healthcare.
"Through the foundation we think then we can move the model forward in terms of venture capital and in terms of companies across the country," says Hanson.
Barry Kolnick, a new Rochester resident was curious about hearing their ideas.
"People have a hard time affording health care and I'd like to see some kind of system that will actually improve health care for us," says Kolnick.
The foundation isn't just looking to fund health care in Rochester; it has a bigger goal in mind.
"That this foundation is the hub of providing health care in the United States, it's the solution,” says Hanson.
"We can start here and we have the mayo clinic and i believe once they catch on it'll just spread," adds Talbot.
This was the foundation's first public meeting. Its hoping to hold similar seminars in the near future.
